How To Create A Cosy Living Room Retreat

When it comes to home decorating, the living room is often the most difficult room to get right. As the main room of the house, it needs to act as a playroom to the kids as well as a place where you can entertain guests.

Just as important, though, it needs to be a place where you can put your feet up and get a little bit of time to breathe and relax after the kids have gone to bed.

Here are some great ideas to make your living room a refuge that can still withstand the hustle and bustle of day-to-day family life.

Your choice of colour can make a real difference to the feel of the room. Earthy tones like dark reds and browns create a warm atmosphere, and are very forgiving when it comes to little mishaps from mucky fingers.
Use colour consistently within the room so that soft furnishings match the walls and carpets. You can always add a flash of contrast with throws, blankets and cushions, and of course, the beauty of these is that they are washable. It also means you can have a choice of soft furnishing accessories to match your mood and the season

Mood lighting is great for creating ambience. Use lamps, spotlights or simple dimmers to create your very own mood. When the kids are finally asleep, there's nothing like turning down the lights and curling up on the sofa for a blissful end to the day.

Shut the world out
It's great to feel that you are tucked away in your own little world at the end of a busy day. Shutting the curtains is one way to do it, but a great alternative can be to fit DIY window shutters. These add a real sense of rustic charm to your home, are hard wearing and are far less hassle to keep clean than curtains, too!
They are also very easy to fit, and can act as an additional layer of insulation in the winter months.

Cushions, cushions and more cushions
Did I mention cushions? You really can't have too many, and the fact that they come in all shapes and sizes means you can create any kind of look. Covers are washable and inexpensive, giving you even more options. They are also super-comfortable.

How about a fireplace?
Log burners are hugely fashionable again, and it is not difficult to see why. Nothing says “cosy” quite like curling up in front of a roaring fire. Not necessarily the perfect thing when the kids are charging around, but modern burners are so quick to get going that the whole routine of lighting it after the children have gone to bed can help create that distinction between family time and adult time for a relaxing evening.

Relax and enjoy!
It might be the hub of a busy family house, but with a little thought and imagination, the living room can still be your own personal retreat!

There are a number of different attachments from massaging to exfoliating, I can't wait to give it a go with my favourite facial wash.

The lunch tote is £7.99, I love the 'Be More Unicorn' slogan and the fab carry handles.

Mothers Day With Matalan

There always seems to be a celebration on the calendar at this time of year, which means a constant stream of gifts and cards to buy. If you are a busy Mum like me the ability to get everything in 1 store is a massive bonus. This Mothers Day Matalan has got you covered with products to suit any budget and gifts for every style. I have been sent a selection of some of the lovely gifts available this Mothers day, in store now!
I love scented items and I am loving reed diffusers, the smell amazing. The Harmony diffuser from the relax at home range is lovely. The scent bottle is larger than some of the one I already own and the subtle smell is beautiful. The Harmony reed diffuser retails at £5.
This photograph frame for only £5 is a nice touch, it's perfect for adding a picture of you and your Mum in and gifting. I love the peg and cardboard look design, it fits in lovely with my light lounge, it is perfect for a pic of you and your Mum, or even your Mum and her grandchild!
This decorative wooden sign is a bargain at only £2, it is actually an outdoor sign but could easily be hung inside also. There a few styles of the sign available in store, but I do love the slogan on this one and the pale pink colour is lovely.
Who doesn't need a makeup bag, this is a great size for only £4. The lining is the same colour pink as the writing on the outside. There is plenty of room inside for all of my basic makeup and it's going to become my weekend away makeup bag, it's even long enough to fit my brushes in without the ends of them being squished.
My Mum is always losing her glasses, she says she doesn't need a case as she wears them all the time! Funny that seen as she's always asking where they are!! This canvas slip in glasses case is only £2 and the ideal thing to slip her glasses inside when she's not using them.
Everybody loves a candle, my lounge is full of them. This lemongrass candle from the elegance at home range is only £6. The lemongrass is a nice gentle scent and I'm impressed with how far the scent travels, I can smell it upstairs when it is lit downstairs, I love the white glass jar the candle comes in too.
I love flowers, but I hate to sit and watch them shrivel up and die, it seems such a waste of money. These artificial flowers are just right for me, I don't have to water them, just have to dust them and they are only £8.
For the Mum who loves a cuppa, this pretty tea set for one is ideal. A pretty china mug, with a teapot and sauce for only £8. This is right up my Mums street and it will match her other corckery, the floral design is very pretty.
A little bit of a pamper is last on the list from Matalan and at the bargain price of just £3. The strawberry and pomegranate has beeswax is a luscious body butter, it smells good enough to eat. After a hard day celebrating and a soak in the bath, I will be treating my skin to a treat of this.

This is just a selection of the large Mothers Day range in store and online now at Matalan. Do pop along and grab them while stocks last.
