5 Things I hate about travelling with children

Cheap Holiday Land carried out a survey to find out what bugs us Brits on hoiday and they've made a fun slideshow widget of the results!

Holiday Gripes by CheapHolidayLand.com
Now I love a good holiday, but I absolutely dread the whole saga of getting to your final destination, especially when you have 4 children in tow. So I am going to share with you my 5 pet peevs of travelling with children.

1. Are We Nearly There Yet?
Honestly how many times do they have to ask this question! We haven't even got out of the car park and they want to know if we are nearly there yet! The same question then gets repeated at least every 5 minutes of the journey. When you have this in quadruple form it gets a little bit tedious!!

2. Toilet Fascination
No matter where we go or how we travel the children seem to have an attraction to the toilet. Now public toilets can be a bit grim, but on a train or plane they are particularly disgusting. They are usually covered in used toilet paper, wet floors and they stink, not that the kids are bothered! They still want to visit every 5 bloody minutes.

3.Refreshments
You're a parent, you know all about being prepared, so you pack a bag of snacks you know they will like. You even let them pick them out themselves, pack them into their own bags, they even argue over who gets what. Then as soon as your on your way they want the over priced junk they sell on the trolleys, and to save all hell breaking loose you begrudgingly pay £8 for 3 packets of crisp and bar of chocolate.

4.Luggage
Travelling pre children was so easy, with my little cute suitcase I could sail through the airport looking all stylish. Now I look like a bag lady, a sweaty bag lady pulling all the cases while Daddy herds children.

5. Expense
The expense of travelling with children is astounding, when you factor in the out of pocket snacks Dick Turpin just robbed you for off the snack trolley, the fact that its cost you an extra £1000 to go in the school holidays and free child's places are limited to 1 per family, well you may as well just stay at home!!!!

Do you travel a lot with children? What do you love or hate about it? Leave me a comment and let me know.

Oxo Scales Review and Lemon Drizzle Cake Recipe

When I joined Slimming World I thought my cake days were over, but I have recently discovered lots of yummy recipes. My usual cake making method is to chuck it all in and hope for the best, I have had to rethink my method as food needs to carefully weighed and measured. I realised I was missing a vital piece of kit....... weighing scales and the lovely people over at Oxo Uk kindly sent me their brand new Compact Food Scale for review.
The Oxo Good Grips Compact Food Scale is the perfect companion for me during my Slimming World journey. Most of the food I eat is completely free but there is a certain amount of measuring for my HEXA and HEXB choices, so the scale will be great help for that to.
The weighing bowl handily clips onto the top of the scale when not in use, this is  a great feature for me as I am forever losing bits of equipment. The angles surface on the scale makes it really easy to read from above, and the sliding tab is easy to use. What I like about the sliding scale it that it is adjustable during use. So I can weigh our my flour, slide the scale back to 0 and the add my sweetener on top. Saves so much messing around emptying and reweighing. The scales weigh out up to 16oz/500g so its plenty big enough for the little jobs I need to do. The bowl is also dishwasher safe, I don't have a dishwasher and found that it rinses off really easily. The bowl is really smooth so your ingredients don't get caught on the corner. The compact scale retails at only £12 which is a great price! The first thing I put it to the test with is the lovely Slimming World Lemon Drizzle Cake recipe. The recipe is super easy and the oxo compact scale was perfect for weighing out the necessary ingredients.
Ingredients
2 Lemons
5 Eggs
45g Granulated Sweetener
50g Self Raising Flour
Method
Measure out and add 30g of the sweetener and all 50g of the flour and add to a large mixing bowl
Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into the mix
Zest both lemons and add the zest to the mix
Separate the egg yolks from the whites and keep the whites to one side
Beat the egg yolks and stir into the mixture
Now whisk the egg whites until the form soft peaks
Fold into the mixture
Pour into a cake tin or loaf tin
Bake at 180C for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown
Now mix the juice of the second lemon with the remaining sweetener
Take cake out of the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes
Pour over the lemon juice and sweetener mix
Put bake in the oven for a further 10 minutes
Now its not like a cake you would normally have, but it is cake none the less. At 8 syns (just 1 syn per slice) for the whole thing its a really good substitute for the days you are really craving a piece of cake! Its totally delicious to.

Sweet Freedom Review & Giveaway

I have a terrible sweet tooth and since I joined Slimming World I have been looking for a low syn fix to see me through. I have lots of active Slimming Worlders on my Instagram and I saw that lots of them are huge fans of the Sweet Freedom range. I have been sent 4 of collection to try out and share with you what I think.
All of the Sweet Freedom range are 100% natural made with just fruit sweetness. They are made with no chemical processing, no additives, no preservatives, no nuts, no dairy, no GMO's and they are low GI. They are perfect if like me you are slimming and they are perfect for diabetics with a sweet tooth. The range includes a fruit syrup in original and dark. They are perfect for sweetening your tea and coffee, or for drizzling on toast, pancakes and adding to your porridge. The 3 yummy choc shots are available in original, the new coconut and the new orange flavours. They make amazing hot chocolate and can be used on toast, pancakes, ice cream, yogurt and well anything you want to sweeten up, to be honest the possibilities are endless.
Above are some of the ways I have tried my products out: first up choc shot coconut on toast with sliced banana, such a yummy combination, its tastes like holidays. Next up cinnamon pancakes with choc shot original and bananas, this was one of my favourite combos. Next up pancakes with choc shot orange, I loved this combo, the choc shot is really nice on pancakes. Last up is choc shot original in my porridge, turns dull porridge into a taste sensation. I genuinely love all of the products and with prices starting from £2.99 they aren't bank breakers either. For my followers who are also Slimming Worlders 1 teaspoon is just half a syn and 1 tablespoon is 2 syns. A little definitely goes a long way and I haven't had to use more than a teaspoon full on my food. It's recommended 3-4 spoonfuls for a hot chocolate.
What do you think? Would you like to try some yourself? Well you're in luck as the lovely people over at Sweet Freedom have given me 3 sets of syrups to give to 3 of my readers. Each winner will receive 1 fruit syrup and 1 of each of the 3 choc shot flavours, so 4 bottles in total. For your chance to win just fill on the rafflecopter below and take a moment to read the terms and conditions before entering. a Rafflecopter giveaway

Slimming World Week 26 Weigh In

My regular readers may have noticed there was no Slimming World weigh in post last week. I was away at the weekend and I had booked a holiday as I would be travelling home on weigh in day. I actually ended up being home in plenty of time for weigh in, but luckily I booked a holiday as I was sick. I visited Weatherspoons whilst away and I am suspect that I got food poisoning following my visit. I got really sick on the train home and was a bit off for 36 hours after.
I am sure I would have had a good result last week, I stuck to my meal plan and went to the gym 3 times. Whilst away I did have a few treats, but kept them all in balance and withing my daily calorie limit on My Fitness Pal. According to my Sisters scales I had lost 3lbs but you should always use the same scales for weigh-in!

On to this weeks weigh in..........

After being sick I found it difficult to be fully on the plan, when I am sick I tend to crave carbs really bad, so I had a few rounds of bread and butter with my soup! It always makes me feel better, I didn't even manage to get to the gym either! I also found out on Sunday that the porridge I eat every day is no longer a healthy extra choice and is actually 4.5 syns per packet!! So, all in all I wasn't looking forward to weigh in, but as I always do I went to accept my fate and as always stay for body magic.
I was quite surprised with the maintain result this week, I always say a maintain is better than a gain. But I know why I got the maintain and I am looking forward to a fresh new week. My maintain does mean that I won't be getting my 2.5 stone award this month, but as long as the numbers keep going down I'm not going to stress about how slow they come off.

I have my meal plan ready and plan to make at least 3 trips to the gym this week. I would like loss of 3lbs next weigh in to make a dent in the 7lbs I need to get to my 2.5 stone award.
This Weeks Result - maintain
Total Weight Loss - 2 stone
This Weeks Goal -  3lbs

Happy Birthday Mr L

To Mr L

Today you turned 12, and it still only feels like yesterday that I brought you home from the hospital. Yours wasn't an easy labour, a 3 day induction and you still had to be dragged out kicking and screaming. But I fell in love the moment I laid eyes on you. A fussy baby, you didn't like to be held, didn't sleep very well and seemed to prefer your own company. We were first-time parents so we didn't know any different, Your Nanna knew that there was something a little different about you, but to us your were just you.
You turned 2 and started at a day nursery, due to your delayed speech, it was them who first threw around the word Autism. We didn't even know what it meant and even after a wave of appointments we were still none the wiser when you were diagnosed. We were sent on our way with a little pack labelled 'Your Child Had Autism' and left to learn.

It was you Mr L who turned us into the parents we are today, following you I had your 2 brothers and sister, because of you, their diagnosis of autism didn't seem such a big deal. You had taught us all we needed to know. It hasn't been an easy 12 years, but you have blossomed into a thoughtful caring boy. You started high school in September and you have taken to the change amazingly. You have less support than your used to but between us all we have made it work. You seem to be more mature with each passing day, you seem to be able to cope with things that little bit more. We still have our wobbly days, but who doesn't! Your Birthday has been how you like it, low key and no singing of Happy Birthday, it still freaks you out!!! SO we blew out your candles in silence as we always have done since you were 2 years old. I can't wait to see what the next 12 years hold and if you fulfil your dreams and wishes.

Happy Birthday beautiful boy, myself and Daddy are so proud of you

Love Mum
xx

Spice up your January with Gousto Review

The chefs at Gousto are encouraging people up and down the country to ditch the diet detoxes and focus on spicing up their kitchen routines instead. Spices are the secret to culinary magic. Used well, they take dishes from ordinary to sublime and often have healing properties - they’re pretty much calorie-free, too. When we think spice, we often think heat. We hear people ask, ‘is it spicy?’, when they actually mean ‘is it hot?’ Spices can be sweet, warm and pungent too. If you’re a little spice shy then allow Gousto to open your eyes to a whole new world! Each week this January, Chef Alice will be featuring a different spice and, alongside a little info on its history, recommending Gousto recipes in which they shine. I am a bit of a spice a phone so I was interested in trying out these recipes and explaining my palette. I was sent a Gousto box containing 2 recipes, 1 of them being Turkish Lamb Bulgur which contains the spice Sumac.
Gousto is a subscription box that is delivered to your home, you choose from 10 different meals each week, you can choose up to 4 meals for between 2 and 4 people. The price is dependant on which and how many meals you choose. The box s then delivered to your door containing everything you need to make your chosen options. They are delivered by courier and the meat is in a cooled bag wth ice packs and wrapped in wool. My box contained 2 meals Jerk Chicken and Turkish Lamb Bulgur, both recipes come with instruction card which you can keep to make the dish again.
I really enjoyed the Jerk Chicken Meal and the recipe card was really easy to follow. The card shows you step by step what to do and how long things need to be cooked for. The cards are actually really good for anyone who is at the beginning of their cooking journey.
I absolutely hate kidney beans, so decided to leave the kidney beans out of the recipe. I loved how the rice tasted with the addition of spring onion and cinnamon, I would never have thought to flavour my rice before. You could really smell the aroma from all the spices in the jerk sauce, and it really got into the chicken as it cooked away in the pot.
I really enjoyed the dish and the sticky jerk sauce was amazing! At 938 calories per portion, it's not the healthiest, but it's definitely delicious!
I was excited to try the Turkish Lamb Bulgur as I am always looking for alternatives to regular rice and pasta and I have never tried harissa or sumac and love to try new things. I thought the harissa had a smell of aniseed to it and wondered if the flavour would be very overpowering in the food.
Again the recipe card was so simple to follow and the smells coming from the pan were amazing. I was impressed with the freshness of all of the ingredients and I like that you have a cook by date on the recipes. There were at least 4 days use on the ingredients which is good as it meant that I didn't have to cook it all as soon as I got it.
The lamb had a lovely spicy kick to it but then you got to the cooling yogurt and delicious bulgur. This is a dish I will definitely be making again. I love the idea of Gousto box and the fact they offer you the chance to try something out of the norm, but if your not a fan of spice or even trying something new, then worry not! You can choose your own menu from what are available that week and the variety is great. You can see this weeks options over on the Gousto Website.

Win a Twistashake - The New Generation in Baby Bottles

When my gang where babies I was always looking for ways to make life that little bit quicker/easier. My little ones are all in school now, but I still marvel at all the new amazing gadgets that come to market. Twistshake’s innovative baby bottle is designed in collaboration with parents of babies. As a result of this unique collaboration, they have developed a baby bottle that can offer children a fun and meaningful experience, while at the same time saving parents from many of the complications associated with preparing a bottle-meal. They asked what parents looked for in a baby bottle:
  • An easy way to store servings
  • Reduction of preparation-time
  • A design allowing for easy gripping
  • Appealing colours
  • Dissolving lumps in the formula
  • Retainment of heat
The design of Twistshake’s teat closely resembles nature. The likeness to the mother’s breast makes the transition from breastfeeding to bottle-feeding both smooth and safe.
  • The flexible top resembles the mother’s nipple and retains the natural sucking pattern.
  • To guarantee that the child gets the right amount of support, the bottom of the teat is soft and bulb-shaped.
  • The anti-colic vault reduces colic and creates an even flow.
  • The teat stop makes sure that the teat is fixed in a stable and safe way during the entire feeding session.
  • The teat is made for every age with its four different flows.
  • Made from premium super soft silicon. Entirely BPA-free.
Twistshake’s teat is developed in cooperation with experts in the field and this is the reason that they can offer a safe and smooth transition between breastfeeding and bottle feeding. The experts Twistshake has brought in for consultation has over 20 years of experience in the field. They have developed the teat together, through continuous and careful testing in regards to its functions.

Slimming World Roast Tomato & Basil Soup Recipe

Soup has been big on the agenda thanks to the massive temperature drop in the last week. I have been searching my Slimming World recipe books looking for soup as I was a bit bored with my usual vegetable soup and I discovered this amazing soup.
Ingredients
900g of ripe tomatoes
1 Red Pepper (optional but I think it tastes lovely)
1 teaspoon of oregano
1 large onion
2 garlic cloves
2 tablespoons of chopped basil
1 litre of vegetable stock
Method
Arrange the tomatoes on a tray and spray with frylite, bake at 200 for 15 minutes
Chop onion and garlic and place in saucepan with 300ml of stock. Cover, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
Peel and chop the roasted tomatoes and add to the pan with the rest of the stock & basil. Simmer for 15 minutes.
Puree the soup with a blender and its ready to eat.
Its not the thickest of soups, so I found it was best served in a cup. Its perfect for upping your speed food intake. I could happily drink it all day!
